Indonesia to implement the EITI

The Government of Indonesia has announced its intention to work towards EITI compliance and to make an application to become an EITI candidate.

An official Note of Understanding between the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, the Finance Minister and the Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources sets out an agreement to work together on the implementation of extractive industries revenue transparency, based on international best practices including the criteria and implementation indicators of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). The initiative will be led by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs.

A Coordination Team for the Preparation of the Implementation of Extractive Industries Revenue Transparency (Tim Kordinasi Persiapan Pelaksanaan Transparensi Pendapatan Negara Yang Diperoleh Dari Industri Ekstraktif) is to be established. Representatives from the International EITI Secretariat and the World-Bank administered Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) will visit Jakarta in March to meet with Indonesian stakeholders to progress this initiative.

Indonesia is the world's most populous extractives-rich state, and is both hydrocarbon and mineral-rich (source: IMF, 2007).
